In an updated complaint that forms part of a lawsuit filed last year, the owner of a commercial property on Main Street said former tenant Garelick & Herbs now owes $173,225.80 in unpaid rent. The gourmet market and caterer’s New Canaan location has been closed since last summer.

Longtime and beloved New Canaan High School English teacher Ben Gordon died Feb. 17, according to an obituary posted to legacy.com. A celebration of his life is to be held at 4 p.m. on April 14 at the Redding Community Center.

Following yet another public hearing, the Town Council on Wednesday night voted 9-2 in favor of an ordinance that will restrict the use of thin plastic bags at local retail establishments. Those voting in favor were Chairman John Engel, Vice Chairmen Sven Englund and Rich Townsend, Jim Kucharczyk, Joe Paladino, Steve Karl, Christa Kevin, Cristina A. Ross, Tom Butterworth and Mike Mauro. Joe Paladino and Penny Young voted against. (Councilman Liz Donovan was absent.)

Police at 2:45 p.m. on Feb. 25 arrested a 31-year-old Norwalk woman through a paperless re-arrest warrant and charged her with second-degree failure to appear. According to Connecticut Judicial Branch records, she had been arrested by state police in January 2017 and charged with evading responsibility, operating a motor vehicle without insurance and following too closely. She also had been arrested by Hartford Police in October and charged with disorderly conduct and third-degree assault, records show.

Officials at the New Canaan Community Foundation offered special thanks to its annual appear co-chairs, Gina and Dennis Podlesak and Joy and Tom Cronin, “for leading our 2018 appeal and being exemplary ambassadors for the Foundation and the work we do.” Nearly 100 volunteers are mobilizing now to re-invest the funds in the community this spring, NCCF said.

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to appoint Nancy Upton to serve as the New Canaan’s representative to the Southwest Regional Communications Center, Inc., Coordinated Medical Emergency Direction Board of Directors. She replaces Katherine Nailor, who resigned.

Elizabeth Zea of New Canaan has joined the board of directors of nonprofit healthcare system Stamford Health. She currently serves on the boards of Horizons, the New Canaan Garden Club and Alexandra’s Playground. A Trinity College graduate with a bachelor’s degree in English literature, Zea is co-founder and managing partner at JUEL, an executive search firm and talent consultancy and agency search firm.
