It’s scholarship application season, and the New Canaan Community Foundation’s Sapienza Scholarship is now open. This unique scholarship allows candidates the opportunity to get assistance for four years for up to $10,000 per year. It is based on financial need, for high school seniors and higher education candidates who are residents of New Canaan. When applying for a Sapienza scholarship, students will also be able to apply for a Silver Hill Scholarship, $2,000 for students studying health care, and a Dorrico Rotary Award, around $3,500 for exemplary public service. New Canaan developer Arnold Karp, a Stamford native, is taking over as chair of the Mill River Park Collaborative, according to an article in The Advocate. Karp is a Greenwich resident and former president of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, the article said.

Hundreds attended ABC House of New Canaan’s annual spring luncheon, held Wednesday at the Country Club of New Canaan. New Canaan High School Principal Bill Egan and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi were the honorees at the sold-out event, a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization. The donor-supported ABC House of New Canaan will mark its 50th anniversary in 2024.

Waveny LifeCare Network announced this week that it has installed seven LifeVac non-invasive upper airway clearing devices across its New Canaan campuses to help mitigate potential risk or injury due to choking. The portable, non-invasive handheld device can be used for emergency airway clearance where standard basic life support protocols have failed. Choking is the fourth most common cause of unintentional injury death, with 3,000 deaths from choking in 2020, Waveny officials say. Waveny has reported no choking-related deaths or injuries in over 10 years, however partial obstruction incidents are unavoidable given the patient population and the prevalence of dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, in people aged 60 and older.

During a discussion during Tuesday’s selectmen meeting regarding a construction loan, New Canaan Library Board of Trustees President Bob Butman said the organization will “hopefully announce a fairly new large pledge in the next several weeks.”

The New Canaan Coalition has announced that its 2023 substance use and misuse campaign will focus on vaping, using a peer-to-peer model. Maureen Asiel of New Canaan CARES, who serves as the Coalition Coordinator, said in a press release, “We appreciate continuing to have teens create unique messaging relaying this important information to their peers.” The campaign kicked off March 27 and features stickers designed by New Canaan teens. These stickers will be placed on to-go bags and coffee cups from our participating partners. Community partners include Chef Prasad, Club Sandwich, New Canaan Chicken, Press Burger, Tony’s and Zumbach’s.

Assembled New Canaan CERT members with Russ Kimes administering the Annual Oath

The New Canaan Community Emergency Response Team or “CERT” held its Annual Meeting recently at Lapham Community Center, assembling more than 45 active members for a review of the year’s events/call-outs and administering of the Annual Oath by Emergency Management Director Russ Kimes. Refresher courses were held on Stop the Bleed, Radio Communication, CPR and new Traffic control equipment were held. In addition, New Canaan Police officer Annamaria Ceci  spoke on behalf of NCPD and Bethany Zaro, Director of NC Health & Human Services outlined town services. Awards for “hours of service” were presented to several active members and refreshments were provided by Joe’s Pizza. Also announced, at the meeting, was that 2023 represents New Canaan ERT’s 20th year of serving the community.

The selectmen on Tuesday approved a $33,000 contract with Almstead Tree & Shrub Care for the removal, pruning and stump removal of 16 trees in town, including four decaying trees in Waveny, officials said.
