A pair of rabbits dumped at the New Canaan Nature Center last weekend—both “very friendly and healthy,” according to Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn—will be up for adoption May 21. “We couldn’t ascertain who dumped the rabbits with the cameras as there was so much activity” at the Nature Center during its festival, Godejohn said. The rabbits do not have to be adopted together. If they’re not adopted, they will go to a rescue organization. Anyone interested should call Animal Control at 203-594-3510.

  1. Thank you, Sean, for taking care of the 2 rabbits that were dumped at the Nature Center. As an experienced rabbit owner for over 20 years, I’d like to share some information about rabbits:

    1. rabbits need a lot of space and should not be kept in a cage for long periods of time. They are very social animals and require 3 to 4 hours of exercise and attention.
    2. hay is difficult to clean. Like cats, their litter boxes need to be cleaned several times a day. NOTE: cat litter is a no-no. We used pine shavings.
    3. since most veterinarians do NOT treat rabbits, you would need to locate a vet who specializes in exotics.
    4. rabbits shed all the time. Their nails need to be trimmed regularly.
    5. they may be small, however, they are quite destructive. Rabbits love to chew on anything including your carpet, furniture, electrical cords, wiring, wood door frames, paper. Rabbit-proofing is essential. They are natural diggers, too.
    6. With good care dwarf bunnies can live over 10 years. Our last bunny lived over 15 years.
    7. If you never owned a rabbit, please consider volunteering at a rabbit shelter before you adopt.

Our 3-pound bunny was more expensive to feed and maintain than our 82-pound Chesapeake Bay Retriever!
