On Sunday, July 14, at 12:15 p.m. East African Time, Anthony Bihl III (67), Erik Johnson (45), and Erik Anders Johnson (17) — grandfather, father and son — reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain in the world at an elevation of 19,341 feet. Bihl, Johnson, and Johnson were a part of a group of 12 trekkers from both the United States and Canada, all of which successfully reached the summit via the Western Approach Route, a hybrid of Kilimanjaro National Park’s Shira and Lemosho routes. The entire trek lasted for nine days, seven of which were spent ascending with the remaining two for the descent. Anders Johnson said in an email: “The hard work and effort put in during the trek was definitely worth it. Few people my age get to say that they have been able to have an experience like this one, and I have gotten so much more out of it than being able to say I summited Kilimanjaro. Sharing the experience with my dad and grandfather was amazing.”
