Police late Monday arrested a 69-year-old Darien man and charged him with driving under the influence.

At about 9:05 p.m. on May 25, officers responded to the area of Park Street and Park Lane on a report of an erratic driver, police said.

Arriving officers found a car parked diagonally on Park Lane with the engine running and a man sitting in the driver’s seat, according to a police report.

In speaking to the driver, officers found that he was incoherent and showed signs of impairment, the report said.

After administering field sobriety tests, police brought the misdemeanor DUI charge. At police headquarters for processing, the man declined to provide a breath sample to establish his blood-alcohol level, the report said.

He was held on $300 bond and scheduled to appear Tuesday in state Superior Court.

  1. Congratulations to New Canaan’s Town Council for passing a much welcomed seasonal ban of gas powered leaf blowers. What was once relegated to annual fall and spring cleaning, the use of gas powered leaf blowers proliferated over the years into year-round, superfluous use by landscapers to justify more staff and higher fees. Any attempt to regulate their use through a noise ordinance would fail as it would merely engage the police into an endless game of whack a mole. But alas, the debate is over and the clear winners are the vast majority of New Canaan residents who are delighted with the passing of the seasonal ban. The landscapers who serve our surrounding communities have already adapted to much more stringent bans without imposing higher costs.
