Fire Marshal: Safety Tips during Power Outages

More

Following is list of helpful tips to keep our families safe during this power outage:

  • If using candles, extreme caution must be used – never leave unattended.
  • If running a portable generator it must be at least 10 feet outside of the structure – never in a garage.
  • Never use propane or charcoal grills inside.
  • Have properly installed and operating smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) detectors.
  • Alarm systems only have about 4-6 hours of stand-by power. If you do not have a generator you may need to install temporary smoke and CO detectors for extended power outages.
  • Never refuel generators while running. They must be shut down and allowed to cool before refueling – at least 15 mins.
  • Make sure generator is properly wired into homes electrical system. Never back-feed through outlets. This can feed power back out to the grid and injure workers trying to restore your power.
