Its windows papered over since Monday following a Father’s Day sale, Jack Wills opened at 136 Elm St. in October 2012.

Officials with the London-based company’s home office said the nearest store at 139 Main St. in Westport remains open, and that fans of the brand also can purchase items online.

Asked for her thoughts on the closing, Laura Budd of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce said: “Of course we are sorry to hear Jack Wills is closing its New Canaan location. We always enjoyed working with them, as they were always ‘game’ to participate in all of our events and enjoyed interacting with the community.”

The company’s aesthetic was often described as “British preppy.”

According to the company’s website: “Jack Wills, for more than 16 years, has brought British heritage-inspired wares off the highest quality to the wardrobes of a spirited and inspired youth, epitomizing what it is to be British, irreverent and carefree.”

  1. “Bricks and mortar ” has become increasingly difficult for national and international retailers and store closings are increasing. New Canaan has been highly populated by chains for years but now perhaps we will see a reversal of this. If there is an increase in vacancies and a resultant downward pressure on rents we could see a much-needed return to stores that sell useful products. Or more” beauty” spas!!
