Just 3 years ago, the Library acquired this 0.19-acreSouth Avenue property (with generous Town help) for $1.475 million. A year before that, New Canaanite reported that “Officials have said the (new library) facility will… preserve the stone façade that faces Main Street in some fashion, feature modern architecture and preserve a traditional look for an area dedicated to events and meeting spaces.” I wonder — since Town officials kept asking for assurance that the 1913 Library would be preserved, and the Library kept saying yes, that if we’d all known back then that demolishing the original library was the ultimate plan, would the nearly half million dollar special Town appropriation toward buying this .19 acre property on South Avenue have even happened? Again, I’m for the new Library, but believe — along with many New Canaanites — that the iconic core 1913 Library should be preserved, as was long promised.
Save the 1913 part – Do not rip down history!
I agree with Todd and Cam–do not demolish the 1913 Library!
