Mary A. Tiani

Mary was a graduate of New Canaan High School and enjoyed keeping in contact with friends from her class. She worked as a bookkeeper at Murphy’s 5 & 10 on Elm Street in New Canaan until her marriage to the love of her life, former New Canaan Police Chief Fredrick Tiani. Together they made many friends among the members of the law enforcement communities in CT and their spouses. When her children reached school age Mary began her next career at the New Canaan Library, first as a volunteer and then as a member of the Technical Staff where she continued to serve the community for fifty years. The staff became very dear to her heart and she to them. They loved her homemade Irish bread and the Italian cookies that she often brought to the office.

The most special people in Mary’s life were the members of her immediate and extended family. She treasured holiday times together and being able to add something she had cooked to the family table. She felt truly blessed to have these people in her life and she loved them all.

Mary is survived by her children Sister Lorraine Tiani, Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur, of New Canaan, and Fredrick Tiani (Marlene) of New Canaan. Mary is also survived by her sister Emilia Meloni, and her two grandchildren, Fredrick and Gina-Marie.

Visitation will be held at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan, Connecticut, on Thursday July 16, 2020 at 10AM followed by her funeral at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan at 12:30 PM. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan.

  1. We invite our newcomers to learn of our local families. In a day gone by The Tiani family was of our core. Mary Tiani was seen at church and everywhere else with a kindness that was oh so very true.
Her wonderful husband Police Chief Tiani reached all of us as well. In that era the station was in the lower section of Town Hall. Many times unannounced, he would walk in full uniform, complete with whistle, to the intersection of South Avenue and Elm Street to direct traffic. It was a special sort of comfort and all of us obediently followed his hand signals and the sharp toots of his whistle.
That the family tradition will be carried on by Sister Lorraine and Fred is of the warmth that we share in our town.
Thank you Mary and Godspeed. Give our best to Chief Fred.
