Police arrested a 20-year-old Norwalk man after midnight Tuesday on a weapons charge after discovering a fixed blade knife in his car during a motor vehicle stop.

At about 12:30 a.m. on April 12, an officer stopped a car that had crossed over the double-yellow line while traveling south on Route 123, according to a police report.

During the stop, the motorist said he’d been texting while driving and that is why he swerved, the report said. The officer detected the smell of alcohol on his breath and the driver subsequently failed field sobriety tests, the report said. He also tested at a blood-alcohol level of .145, the report said—nearly twice the legal limit.

He was charged with driving under the influence and cited for distracted driving.

While searching the vehicle after the arrest, police found a Winchester fixed blade knife with a blade length of 4.875 inches.

He additionally was charged with weapons in a motor vehicle.

Police released him on $500 bond and scheduled him to appear April 26 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
