Police say 220 square feet of marble tile—about $3,626 worth—has been reported stolen from a construction site in New Canaan.

The West Road construction site was unsecured and many people had access to it, according to Sgt. Peter Condos of the New Canaan Police Department.

The complainant, a Milford-based contractor, said he was reporting the larceny for insurance purposes, according to Condos.

It was discovered missing June 30 and reported to police at 9:30 a.m. on July 8.

Police are investigating a report of identity theft in which someone opened four department store accounts in a New Canaan man’s name and spent several hundred dollars.

The 40-year-old victim at 3 p.m. on July 8 told police that accounts had been opened fraudulently at Babies “R” Us, JC Penny, Wal-Mart and Macy’s, according to Condos.

The Wal-Mart account had been opened with a $1,000 credit line (there’s $527 in it now) and Macy’s with a $1,700 limit (there’s a zero-dollar balance now).

The victim discovered the ID theft when Capital Bank contacted him about the newly opened accounts, Condos said.
