Police on Sunday arrested a 39-year-old Stamford man and charged him with driving under the influence, failure to take a sobriety test and failure to drive right.

At about 1:08 a.m. on Dec. 31, an officer spotted a vehicle coming off of the Merritt Parkway at Exit 36, according to a police report. It swerved into the oncoming traffic lane on Old Stamford Road and then came to a stop, the report said.

During a subsequent stop, the officer smelled alcohol and found signs of impairment in the driver, it said.

The officer conducted field sobriety tests and arrested the man for DUI. Back at police headquarters, he refused to provide a breath sample to establish his blood-alcohol level.

He was released on $250 bond and scheduled to appear Jan. 12 in state Superior Court.
