At about 1:47 p.m., New Canaan Police were dispatched to Ponus Ridge in the area of Davenport Ridge Road on a report of an erratic driver, according to a press release.

Responding units saw a light-colored minivan stopped on Ponus Ridge with a male operator who initially appeared unresponsive in the driver’s seat, the press release said.

After he became responsive, the operator drove away from officers and subsequently drove the vehicle off the road and over a stone wall, police said. The minivan traveled down an embankment and came to rest after hitting the pole, then ignited into flames, according to police.

The driver was removed from the minivan. Units from the New Canaan Fire Department and New Canaan Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, police said.

“The operator was transported to Norwalk ER for an evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries,” the NCPD press release said.

The crash is under investigation.
