Police last week received yet another report of a motor vehicle illegally entered while parked at Irwin Park, and items stolen from it.

At about 11:11 a.m. on Aug. 17 (Tuesday), a resident reported the larceny to police at the department’s headquarters. The vehicle had been locked, with its windows left slightly open, the resident told police, and debit and credit cards were stolen along with $95 in cash.

Around the same time, a resident of St. John’s Place reported to police that her neighbor’s vehicle had a shattered passenger-side window, officials said. Arriving officers found that the vehicle was unlocked, with its key fob on the center console, according to a press release issued by Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the illegal entries were related. Two earlier thefts from vehicles had occurred at Irwin Park on July 31, police have said. Unlocked vehicles at the Country Club and Mounted Troop also recently had items stolen from them, police have said.

The chief reported to the Police Commission at the appointed body’s July meeting that through the first six months of the year, New Canaan had 21 larcenies from motor vehicles. The figure has since jumped to 30, Krolikowski said recently, along with at least 25 stolen vehicles.

Yet another vehicle was reported stolen o the origin of Aug. 13—a Range Rover let unlocked with the keys inside on Rosebrook Road. It later was recovered on Interstate 95 near the Fairfield rest area, police said.

At about 7:22 p.m. on Aug. 17, officers were dispatched to a Hillcrest Road residence on a report of a “suspicious vehicle that had been parked on the homeowner’s lawn since the early morning hours,” Krolikowski said in the press release.

“Officers discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Booton, N.J.,” he said. “Inside the vehicle were two credit cards. The credit cards did not belong to the owner of the vehicle and the owner did not recognize the name on the credit cards.”

  1. I started a spreadsheet late in the game, tracking the car thefts and larcenies. To date there are roughly 70 separate roads, 3 clubs and 2 parks from which vehicle were stolen or or had items stolen.

Items stolen include, numerous drivers licence, credit cards, debit cards, social security cards, passports, password books, private client papers, checks, cash, golf equipment, clothes, house keys and even a pistol permit.

Just imagine trying to replace any one of these items let alone a combination of them, and having to change the locks on your house after keys have been taken.
