Police on Thursday morning arrested a 32-year-old Ansonia woman by warrant and charged her with failure to report abuse, neglect or injury of a child, sale of a controlled substance and sale or delivery of tobacco to minors.

In March, New Canaan Police were alerted that a social worker was making home visits to treat a juvenile resident in town and was providing that youth with marijuana and vape pods, according to a police report.

Following an investigation, police discovered that the social worker had failed to report potential incidents of neglect and abuse regarding the juvenile, the report said.

Police obtained a warrant and the woman turned herself in at about 9:45 a.m. on May 9. The failure to report abuse charge is a Class D felony.

Mark Sherman, the arrested woman’s Stamford-based defense attorney said it was premature to comment on the case, adding that she “fully cooperated with authorities and hopes to resolve these charges quickly and fairly.”

She was released on $100,000 bond and scheduled to appear May 21 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

Police withheld further information, saying the matter directly involved a juvenile.
