Remembering Essence Sharie Preyer, 33

More

On September 13, 2025, the world lost a beautiful soul when Essence Sharie Preyer passed away in New Canaan at the age of 33.

Essence Sharie Preyer

Essence was born on September 30, 1991, in Stamford, the daughter of Gregory Keith Preyer and Lucy Denise McCoggle. From the very beginning, she shined with warmth, laughter, and a light that drew people in.

She was bubbly, approachable, and passionate—a woman who lived with energy, spontaneity, and love. She had a way of making everyone feel seen and cared for, and she never hesitated to give, even if it meant literally offering the shirt off her back. Essence’s generous spirit and radiant smile left an unforgettable mark on all who knew her.

Above all, Essence was a devoted mom to her two children, Christopher (13) and Emelia (6), who were her greatest joy. She poured her heart into her family, encouraging her loved ones, lifting others up, and carrying more responsibility than most would ever know—all with grace and without complaint.

Essence loved traveling, being creative, and surrounding herself with friends and laughter. She embraced life fully, whether it was a night out dancing or sharing quiet moments at home.

A graduate of Westhill High School, Essence worked in customer service in Stamford, Greenwich, and Darien—where she delighted in the story of once meeting Diana Ross. Most recently, she worked at The Playhouse movie theater in New Canaan, the town she called home.

She is survived by her children, Christopher and Emelia; her parents, Gregory and Lucy; her siblings Jacqueline Samuel (Reginald), Alexandria Roundtree, Ebony Preyer, Lauren Wright, and Gregory Preyer; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her grandparents.

Essence will be remembered for her laughter, her kindness, her vibrant spirit, and the way she made life brighter for everyone around her.

Those wishing to donate in her memory may do so here.

The funeral service will be held immediately following a 10 to 11 a.m. viewing today, Monday, Sept. 22, at The Bethel AME Church, 150 Fairfield Ave., Stamford, CT 06902.

  1. We worked together back in 2012. Essence was a blessing and spread sunshine everywhere she went. I have not seen her in a long time, but I am deeply saddened by her passing. May God Bless the Entire Family and all over her loved ones.

  2. We will remember Essence for her welcoming spirit and zest for life. It was a pleasure knowing her at The Playhouse and we will miss her. We pray for her children, extended family, and friends.
