Election 2019: Caucuses Set Contested Races for Board of Selectmen, Board of Ed, Town Council [TABLE]

New Canaan voters on Nov. 5 will cast ballots in three contested—for the Board of Selectmen, Board of Education and Town Council—following Tuesday night’s Democratic and Republican caucuses. Local Democrats at Town Hall nominated not only Craig Donovan for first selectman and Kit Devereaux for selectman, as announced, but also nominated two candidates for Board of Ed and three for Town Council. Of the four Board of Ed seats up for election, three currently are held by Republicans, meaning the Democrats are seeking to “pick up” a seat. School board Chairman Brendan Hayes and Steve Eno, a parent involved in the effort to start school later for adolescents, were nominated by New Canaan Democrats for the Board of Ed.

Letters of Endorsement: Republican Board of Education Candidates

NewCanaanite.com received the following endorsement letters for Republicans seeking party backing at the caucus for election to the Board of Education. The endorsements are published here in the order in which they were received. The GOP caucus is to be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the New Canaan High School gym. 

The New Canaanite will not publish endorsement letters for the caucus after Sunday, July 14. ***

While we are still enjoying summer vacation, there are a few important developments for parents, teachers, and everyone else interested in New Canaan’s schools. 

Since the beginning of this year, I have been helping organize Hands Off Our Schools, a statewide, non-partisan movement that advocates for local decision-making in education for all school districts within Connecticut. We support voluntary shared services between school districts and between school districts and municipal governments to improve educational outcomes and reduce costs.

Letter: Daniel LaGattuta for Board of Education

Dear Editor,

Please join me in supporting Daniel LaGattuta for a Board of Education position at next week’s Republican Caucus. I had the pleasure of first meeting Daniel eight years ago through the New Canaan Newcomers Club and have spent many summers with his family at the Waveny Pool.  

He is extremely well educated—BA from NYU in mathematics and political science and a PhD in Economics from MIT. He has spent his recent years founding and running, Learning & the Brain, a company that provides professional development for K through12 educators through the creation of education conferences, one-day seminars and summer institutes. 

The combination of his education and career pursuits gives Daniel a unique perspective that would greatly benefit our Board of Education. He is thoughtful and well researched.

Letter: Bob Naughton for Board of Education

Please join me and vote for Bob Naughton for Board of Education at the Republican Caucus on Tuesday, July 16th. 

Bob’s extensive private sector experience in the education field combined with his knowledge of our community make him the ideal candidate. Bob is currently the Chief Technology Officer of an educational assessment company in NYC and he has been in the education industry for close to a decade. Additionally, Bob and has worked in the technology field for almost 30 years. Bob would bring a unique perspective to the Board of Education as he understands both the business of education and technology’s role in today’s schools. Given his education and technology background, Bob will be able to help identify ways to increase the efficiency of our school system without impacting the high level of education we currently enjoy. Bob believes that the Board’s decision-making process should be transparent to keep community members fully informed.
