Town Re-Closes Playing Fields, Hopes to Re-Open Wednesday-Thursday

Town officials say they’re hoping to open several of New Canaan’s playing fields Wednesday and by Thursday, to open the rest. According to John Howe, superintendent of parks for the New Canaan Department of Public Works, the town opened everything Monday but then had to shut it back down again Tuesday morning with the overnight rain. “I’m hoping that tomorrow [Wednesday] we’ll have quite a lot open and then Thursday, weather permitting, we’ll be back and have everything opened up,” he said. “What we haven’t been able to finish is getting everything lined out, painted and goals put up. We’re still working on it whenever we can, but of course it’s raining.”

Consecutive snowstorms and freezing temperatures contributed to lingering frost from February into March, delaying the opening of the fields.

Road to Repeat: 2014 New Canaan Rams Baseball

It’s a tough act for New Canaan Rams head coach Mitch Hoffman to follow. Leading his team to the school’s first state baseball championship in 63 years was probably the top New Canaan sports story of 2013. Even so, Hoffman is not one to look back…especially considering the level of talent the Rams will put on display in 2014. New Canaan will return six starters to the lineup this season. And despite losing two of the best players in the state–Andrew Casali and Casey Ouellette–to graduation, Hoffman thinks this year’s squad has the potential to be even stronger.

The Little Things: New Canaan Baseball/Softball and Karl Chevrolet

This is our third installment of “The Little Things,” where we spotlight quiet, often unnoticed yet important acts of consideration, kindness and community in New Canaan that may otherwise be taken for granted. These are things that make a major difference in our lives and today we’re recognizing two longstanding organizations that each year come together to benefit the community through a cherished youth program: New Canaan Baseball/Softball Inc. and Elm Street mainstay Karl Chevrolet. “New Canaan baseball has been in our world now for a long, long time,” Steve Karl—formerly of the Bantam league Hurons—said on a recent afternoon from his office at the dealership. “I played in the league myself, my brother played in the league. I’ve had four boys who have all played in New Canaan Baseball.”

Karl Chevrolet—through Chevrolet, “the big company,” as Karl puts it—runs a national program that distributes funds to specific youth baseball and softball leagues through local Chevy dealers.
