New Canaan Pride 9u’s Double Dip Yorkville

The New Canaan Pride 9u won their sixth and seventh consecutive games of the spring travel baseball season with Sunday’s doubleheader sweep over the Yorkville (NYC) Eagles at Mellick Field. New Canaan 12, Yorkville 2

In Game One, the Pride scored more runs than they would need in the top of the 1st inning, as Nick Burns reached first after being hit by a pitch and stole second. Ian Wearing ripped a single to RF to score Burns for the game’s first run. After Daniel Rogers walked, Eoin Mueller plated Wearing with an RBI single, giving New Canaan a 2-0 lead. Giovanni Cascione drove a triple to the Mellick Field fence to drive in 2, extending New Canaan’s lead to 4-0.

In one of the most dramatic days on the diamond in recent memory, the New Canaan Rams baseball and softball teams each pulled off improbable–and important–victories over Trumbull High School Wednesday night. Alex LaPolice’s walkoff grand slam capped off an amazing comeback for New Canaan, who entered the 7th and final inning down 4-0. The Rams seemingly had no answers for Trumbull starter Avery Santos, who went into the seventh inning looking to close out the game having given up just five runs through the first six innings. Santos, however, seemed to suddenly tire in the seventh and lose command of his pitches. Two New Canaan hits, a fielder’s choice, and a hit batter closed the gap to 4-1, loaded the bases and brought the potential winning run to the plate.

New Canaan Youth Baseball Roundup: May 18

Balls were flying and leather was flashing across New Canaan’s diamonds last week as the youth baseball season moved into its third week. The Yankees made some strides in the Majors 70’s league with a pair of impressive wins over neighboring teams from Norwalk. Meanwhile the Orioles and A’s played a classic game at Mellick Field that ended in a deadlock, and the younger Yankees team closed the gap in the AA division. Majors (70’s)

Yankees–8, Village Gourmet–4 ; Yankees–8, George Comfort–3

Jackson LaSusa, Griffin Koch and James Singer each had 2 hits as the South End Yankees beat Norwalk’s Village Gourmet 8-4. Ryan Higgins pitched 2 shutout innings and Jack Ellis pitched the final 4.  The Yankees played the last 4 innings with 8 players and all came together to defend the lead.

The Cubs were the big winners in the AA Division last week, as two wins over the Braves pulled them to within a game of the league-leading Reds and Mets. Meanwhile in the hotly contested AA Division the Yankees took over the top spot, moving a half-game in front of the previously unbeaten Athletics. Here is a look at some of last week’s action on the New Canaan youth diamonds.

AAA

Cubs–5; Braves-4

The Oxygen Fitness Braves and Camsan Electric Cubs opened their season with a 5-4 barnburner, won by the Cubs. The Braves grabbed the lead early.  Peter Jardim ripped a single before Matthew Benevento crushed a triple to deep center.  The Cubbies took the lead back in the 2nd, as Mike Sanseverino and Nick Garcia led-off with singles, and were driven home by Matt Balkun and Ryan Werneburg. The Braves would grab the lead again when Carson Perlman laced a single to center to drive home Will Galvan and Jardim.  But the Cubs would again rally.  Werneburg knocked in Balkun, and Sanseverino drew a bases-loaded walk to grab a 5-4 lead.

New Canaan Pride Travel Baseball Dominating the Competition

The New Canaan Pride travel baseball program is in full swing, with teams competing in regional action across seven different age groups ranging from 8u to 15u. Although the program is only in its second year it has already seen its fair share of success, having won Cal Ripken district titles in both the 10u and 12u divisions this past summer. And if early spring action is an indicator of future results, the 2014 clubs are primed to make an impact this year as well. 10u
New Canaan Pride – 11; Yorktown – 1
New Canaan Pride – 15; Yorktown – 0
New Canaan Pride 10u had their best outing of the season dominating a doubleheader against Yorktown by a combined 26-1 score at Mellick Field last Sunday. The Pride jumped on top 2-0 as Ryan Werneburg stroked a double to center, plating Carson Perlman.   Cos DeFelice started thing off in the 2nd, ripping a single to left.  Base knocks by Charlie Mehos and Chris Luchette would load the bases before run-scoring doubles by Matt Balkun and Colin Cleary, and a line-drive single from Perlman made the score 8-0. Yorktown would cut the lead to 8-1 when DeFelice took out his whacking stick and drove a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence to make it 9-1.  Later, a triple from Perlman, double by Werneburg, and an RBI single by Matt Boland would end the mercy-rule win for the Pride.
