Catherine Palmer, wanted by New Canaan Police on three counts of felony cruelty to animals, has been ordered by a state Superior Court judge to appear Dec. 2 in a related civil matter regarding the ownership of 12 dogs that authorities last week removed from a Butler Lane house. ***

An iconic New Canaan house—a home that historians say was the first in town to be lighted by gas, in the 1870’s—was sold this month for $1 million. Built ca. 1852, the “Victorian Villa” at 528 Main St.

The commercial building at 102 Main St. has sold for $1.1 million, according to a property transfer recorded Aug. 28 in the Town Clerk’s office. Located at the corner of East Avenue, tenants include a tailor’s and day spa. The new owner is a limited liability company whose managing principals include a Ponus Ridge man, state records show. ***

Filling In The Blanks, a nonprofit organization founded by two New Canaan women that provides children in need with meal bags on the weekends, is running its annual Holiday Backpack Drive downtown from Sept.

Quiet Heroes of New Canaan: JoAnn Shaughnessy

Robin Bates-Mason, who gives of her time for the town’s Volunteer Shopping Program, visited Walter Stewart’s Market as usual one day last week. 

Picking up groceries for “her” designated senior, New Canaan’s Margaret Cooper, Bates-Mason found herself in JoAnn Shaughnessy’s lane. A cashier at Stewart’s for about two years, Shaughnessy recognized Cooper’s name. “She said, ‘Oh, hold on a sec, I just want to write her a message’ and ran over to get a marker,” Bates-Mason recalled. 

Shaughnessy wrote: “Hi Margaret. Hope you’re well.
