Update 2 p.m. Monday

TD Bank issued the following statement in response to an inquiry from NewCanaanite.com (the New Canaan branch is the only one closing in Fairfield County, officials said):

“As one of the top 10 banks in the U.S., TD is continually evolving the way we serve our customers and communities to best meet changing customer expectations and behaviors, remain competitive and drive long-term growth. We strive to deliver an optimal mix of convenient TD Bank locations and digital banking products and services that are second to none.  With those goals in mind, we regularly evaluate our existing TD Bank stores and new locations.

“After a thorough review, we have decided to close our location at 272 Elm Street, New Canaan, effective April 23. While this is a change, we look forward to continuing to serve our New Canaan Customers at our TD Bank Store at 380 Main Avenue in Norwalk, CT, just a few miles down the road, as well as through our convenient online and mobile banking services; live Customer service support available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year; and our vast network of ATMs.

“In reaching a decision to close a specific TD Bank store, we consider many business factors, including the number of Customers visiting our stores, transaction volumes, the location’s proximity to other TD Bank stores and the number of Customers who use multiple store locations. We have already begun notifying impacted customers. Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible for them.

“Our stores remain an important pillar of our strategy and we are committed to reinvesting across our footprint which could include Store renovations, new store locations, or the expansion of our ATM Network, while continuing to make further investments in our digital and mobile platforms in response to evolving Customer preferences. We remain committed to our Customers, our Colleagues and the Communities that we serve, and look forward to continuing to provide outstanding service to our customers via whatever channel they choose.”

TD Bank is closing its New Canaan branch in three months, according to a letter sent to local customers.

The bank at 272 Elm St. will close April 23, according to a letter dated Jan. 21, obtained by NewCanaanite.com.

“It’s not goodbye forever, though,” the letter said. “We’re moving in with our TD Bank neighbors close by.”

It’s unclear whether or what additional TD Bank locations are closing. Company officials could not immediately be reached for comment. An auto-response from the company’s Facebook message service said, “Thanks for connecting with TD. We’ll be right with you!”

The news follows Bank of America’s temporary closure of its own branch on Elm Street.

Both banks in their messaging to customers noted that they’ve continued to operate through websites and mobile apps.

The property at 272 Elm St. is owned by a limited liability company, tax records show. Its principals include residents of Norwalk and St. Cloud, Fla., according to Connecticut Secretary of the State records.

[Editor: We’ve specified that Bank of America’s closure was temporary, as noted in the linked article.]

  1. Bank of America on Elm St is not closed. I was there last week. I believe they temporarily closed down various branches for Covid cleaning

  2. “TD Bank will close 81 of its 1,223 retail branches, almost 7% of all locations, as the pandemic has accelerated the switch from brick-and-mortar to digital banking.”
