Snow Storm—Jan. 25, 2026

Update 9 p.m. Sunday

Town Hall, New Canaan Library and New Canaan Public Schools will be closed Monday, as the town digs out of a winter storm where snowfall was followed by sleet and rain, causing dangerous road conditions. An estimated 10-plus inches of snow fell on the town.

New Canaanites awoke Sunday to a blanket of white amid a widely anticipated winter storm that’s expected to continue walloping the town and much of the northeast and nation overnight.

The National Weather Service is calling for up to 16 inches of snowfall as New Canaan, and all of southern Fairfield County, remain under a Winter Storm Warning through 1 p.m. Monday.

“Sleet may mix in with the snow late this evening,” according to the NWS.

“Roads will become snow covered and hazardous,” the weather service said. “Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow.”

Residents are urged to delay travel from Sunday into Monday.

“If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution,” the NWS said.

New Canaan Public Schools will be closed Monday, the district announced in an email.

“The forecast is for a long duration storm, and we’ll be monitoring it closely throughout today and tomorrow in order to assess readiness for school on Tuesday morning. We’ll be in touch with an update early Monday evening,” NCPS said.

New Canaan Library and the New Canaan YMCA are both closed Sunday due to the storm, while some businesses opted to close early—such as Walter Stewart’s (closed at 12 p.m. Sunday)—and others closed outright for the day (such as Cherry Street East). As of noon Sunday, the town had not made any announcements about a Monday closure of Town Hall.

The library said in an Instagram post: “Monday impacts to our opening hours are very possible to allow for snow cleanup, so please check our website for the latest updates on our hours and scheduled programs.”

On Friday, New Canaan’s director of emergency management, Russ Kimes, urged residents to stay off the roads and remove parked cars from the street and lots so that cleanup crews could clear them.

Kimes also noted in his townwide update that “extreme cold temperatures” are forecast for this week following the snowfall. Combined with the sleet expected late Sunday, the freezing conditions are expected to complicate the snow cleanup process and prolong hazardous driving conditions.

  1. I had to run to town this morning and I was stunned at how well the roads have been cleared at this point following the biggest snowfall I’ve seen in twelve winters here. Shout out to Tiger Mann and his crews for a fantastic job.
