Police arrested two brothers, ages 20 and 21, on felony charges late Saturday after they stole an unlocked Range Rover (keys inside) from a Welles Lane driveway.
The New Haven men also stole $2,200 in clothes from a different unlocked car in the driveway and ended up crashing the Range Rover on Frogtown Road at about 11:05 p.m. on Aug. 14, according to a police report. The older brother had backed up onto an embankment, rolled the SUV and became trapped inside, the report said.
About 45 minutes after police charged him, the arrested man contacted his younger brother to post bond, it said. That brother then parked outside police headquarters in a vehicle that officers had seen leaving the scene of the theft earlier in the night, and in plain view on the passenger seat of that car was a handgun (an Airsoft facsimile firearm), the report said.
The older brother was charged with first-degree larceny, third-degree burglary, fourth-degree larceny, reckless driving, third-degree larceny and felony conspiracy. He also was charged with driving with out a license.
The younger brother was charged with illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, disobeying the signal of an officer and two counts of felony conspiracy.
Both were held on $55,000 bond and scheduled to appear Monday in state Superior Court.
