Divided Commission Voids $30 Parking Ticket

A North Stamford mother of two who said she did not realize the section of the Playhouse Lot where she parked required payment had her $30 ticket voided by the New Canaan Parking Commission on a divided vote at its most recent meeting. 

Valerie Storr, told commissioners July 8 that she had just come from a pediatrician’s appointment with her young children and was trying out the New Canaan office for the first time. She received a ticket on June 16 at 2:37 p.m. in the Playhouse Lot. In a written appeal, Storr said she had not noticed the upper and lower portions of the lot were different. “I’m very sorry.

A new specialty shop has opened at 70 Main St. in New Canaan, bringing technical running, cycling and ski apparel from independent and emerging brands to the former gallery space that sat vacant for several years. Alex Holmes, founder of The Amateur, said the store has been decades in the making. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to find a space with all of the endurance-focused sport brands that are driven by culture and performance and put them in one place,” Holmes said.

New Canaan Police See Sharp Rise in Stolen Vehicles, Thefts from Cars

Stolen vehicles in New Canaan are running at nearly twice last year’s pace so far in 2026, Police Chief John DiFederico told members of the Police Commission at their July 8 meeting, citing a pattern that has persisted despite repeated warnings from the department. Year-to-date through June 30, 15 vehicles have been stolen in town, compared to eight over the same period in 2025, according to the department’s monthly statistics. Larcenies from motor vehicles have risen even more sharply over the same stretch, jumping from three year-to-date in 2025 to 15 so far this year. DiFederico said the cause is largely the same as it has been.

Town Voids $60 Elm Street Parking Ticket Issued to Woman Who Hadn’t Been to New Canaan Since Meters Installed

A Stamford woman who said she had not visited downtown New Canaan since the town installed parking meters had her $60 ticket voided unanimously by the Parking Commission at its most recent meeting, after raising a pointed question about the visibility of the signs on Elm Street. Catherine Galvin received a ticket at 2:49 p.m. on March 30 on Elm Street. The base ticket amount of $30 had since escalated to $60 due to nonpayment. In a written appeal submitted to the Commission prior to its July 8 meeting, she said she had come to town to shop and walked directly into the store in front of her without noticing any signage.
