Anna Marie Schroeder, 80

Anna Marie Schroeder of New Canaan, Connecticut passed away in her sleep at home on Thursday, May 18, 2023 after a four-year battle with cancer. Anna Marie was born in Poughkeepsie, New York to Nettie and John Crevino on September 22, 1942.  Following college, she worked in the travel industry for many years enabling her to travel extensively throughout Europe and the Caribbean. She met the love of her life, Klaus E. Schroeder, on one of her trips, and they were married in 1982.  They lived in Greenwich until they moved to New Canaan in 1985. Anna Marie was a member of St. Aloysius Church and actively involved in various parish groups, particularly Our Lady’s Guild and Adult Bible Study programs.  For several years she was a volunteer for The New Canaan Inn at Waveny.  She was also a member of The Saugatuck Shores Club in Westport.

Herbert Carl Sutherland Helle, 92

Herbert Carl Sutherland Helle passed away peacefully at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT on May 16th, 2023, surrounded by loving family. Herb touched many lives in his 92 years and was known for his quick smile, witty sense of humor, and penchant for sharing stories and laughs with family and friends. 

Born in Brooklyn, NY Herb later moved to Cranford, NJ, where he attended Cranford High School. His college years took him to Brown University in Providence, RI, where he was a member of the class of 1952 and Zeta Psi fraternity.  After Brown, he served in the U.S. Army, where he held responsibility for guided missiles at White Sands Proving Grounds, NM and Huntsville, AL.  
In 1959, Herb married his college sweetheart, the former Nancy Schuleen, who caught his eye and heart at a Brown / Zeta Psi party, where she was taking requests at the piano. After their honeymoon, Herb and Nancy lived in New York City, followed by Bernardsville and New Vernon, NJ, and ultimately their forever home in New Canaan, CT, where they’ve resided since 1964. 
Herb enjoyed his long tenure with IBM, beginning as a sales trainee in Newark, NJ.  For most of his career, Herb traveled the country–from Alaska and Hawaii, to the principal cities of the other lower 48 states–serving as an IBM brand and product ambassador and organizational leader for IBM’s business trade shows.

Brendan O’Halloran, 60

Brendan O’Halloran passed peacefully on May 9 with his wife, daughter and son by his side. He finally succumbed to melanoma that had originally been diagnosed in 2007.  Beloved husband of Lorraine for 30 years, he is survived by his daughter, Grace, of Charlotte and son, Aidan, of New York City.  He also leaves behind his sister Catherine of Toronto, Canada. Brendan was born on September 19, 1962 in Toronto to Brendan and Mary O’Halloran of Dublin and County Mayo, Ireland, respectively. He was most proud of his parents who had worked so hard to provide his sister and him with opportunities of which they could only dream. 
After attending high school in Toronto at St. Michael’s College, he left Canada to attend Princeton University where he ran on the Track & Field team and served as an Officer of the University Cottage Club. 
He joined the investment banking firm, The First Boston Corporation, in Manhattan after being graduated in 1985.

Joan Sally Lapin, 88

Joan Sally Lapin of New Canaan, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 8, 2023, after a long illness. She was 88. Her family and friends mourn the loss of a beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Joan was a lifelong resident of New Canaan. She was born at Norwalk Hospital on February 2, 1935, the second daughter of Hannah and Leo Rosen. When she was eleven, Joan’s parents built a house on Grace Street, where the family moved from the home they’d been renting on Lakewood Avenue.

Wally P. Meyer, 97

Wally P. Meyer, a 52-year resident of New Canaan, passed away peacefully at her home in Redding on May 8, 2023, surrounded by her three beloved daughters.  Mrs. Meyer was 97 years old. She was born on October 31,1925, in Rochester, NY, to the late Friedel and Albert Papenfus who were proud German immigrants and well known small-business owners with a popular and successful catering business for many decades.  
Although born in Rochester, Wally spent her childhood and adolescent years living and attending school in Kassel, Germany, where she resided with her maternal grandparents and extended German family from 1928-1940.  Returning to her parents in Rochester, she attended local middle and high schools, graduated from the Rochester Business Institute, and attended the University of Rochester. Prior to her marriage, Wally worked for many years as a secretary to the late Dr. George Engel, a nationally recognized professor at the University of Rochester’s Department of Psychiatry, as well as a secretary and lab technician for the late Dr. Herbert Mermagen, in the Medical Physics Department of the then Atomic Energy Project at the University of Rochester.  Dr. Mermagen was a medical physicist involved in the early development of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos.  When not working, Wally spent her free time as an enthusiastic skier and member of the upstate New York Burby Hollow Ski Club where she met her husband Werner T. Meyer.  They were married in Rochester in 1959.  She and her late husband Werner would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February of 2009, shortly after Werner passed away. In the early years of their marriage, Wally and her husband lived overseas for numerous years in London, England and Brussels, Belgium, and traveled extensively all over the world.  Wally was always proud of, and actively maintained, her international connections throughout her personal life as well as through her husband’s international career when she was a partner in his international consulting practice.  Upon retirement, Wally continued to have a special interest in the global community with friends and family residing all over the world.
