On behalf of the New Canaan Athletic Alumni Association (formerly the New Canaan Old Timers Association) and local sports fans, I would like to congratulate the New Canaan High School varsity basketball team and coaching staff on their remarkable and unforgettable run in the CIAC Division II state playoffs. This team exemplified everything that makes high school sports special—teamwork, dedication and selflessness. Peaking at the right time, the Rams delivered two thrilling victories — a dramatic second-round win over Platt followed by an incredible double-overtime battle against Maloney in the quarterfinals.

To the Editor –

One of the great strengths of New Canaan is our commitment to the health and well being of residents, including vulnerable groups such as children, seniors and people with chronic health conditions.  For this reason, I’d like to highlight an overlooked health risk that we as a town have a great opportunity to address – gas powered leaf blowers.

Many people assume the environmental impact of a leaf blower is minimal. In reality, the small two-stroke engines used in gas-powered blowers produce astonishingly high levels of air pollution. Unlike modern automobiles or lawn mowers, these engines burn a mixture of gasoline and oil and release a significant portion of it unburned into the air.

Who Knew: Wonder No More

‘Who Knew?’ is sponsored by Walter Stewart’s Market. I never write bad reviews. If a restaurant isn’t for me, I say so privately and move on; taking public shots at a small local business seems cruel when umpteen other forces stand ready to shutter an eatery any given day. Today, though, I’m making an exception, because what has quietly arrived in Stamford, dressed in the language of convenience and community, is not a small local business. It just plays one on a screen near you.

New Canaan may appear to be a typical small New England town, but it’s not. It is really two towns, a dense central village area surrounded by low density residential areas. The town recognized this in 1957 when the New Canaan Sewer District was formed to bring water and sewer services to the higher density neighborhoods.
