A local dog bit a juvenile on Elm Street on a recent afternoon, prompting authorities to issue a 10-day quarantine for the animal, records show.
At about 4:45 p.m. on March 31 (a Friday), a curly brown-haired dog lunged as two kids ran by a man walking up Elm Street, according to an incident report obtained by NewCanaanite.com through a public records request.
Shortly after the incident, the juvenile discovered that they’d been bit, drawing New Canaan Emergency Medical Services and police to the scene, the incident report said. It wasn’t clear at the time whether the dog in question was up-to-date on its rabies vaccination, according to the incident report, written by NCPD Officer Rodger Hamilton.
The juvenile’s family declined medical treatment, the report said.
Police “canvassed the area for security cameras to see if we could find video footage that would help us to identify the dog and its owner,” it said.
The officers discovered that at the time of the bite, “the dog was wearing a vest with the name Tucker,” the incident report siad.
Police “were able to identify the dog’s owner” as a Main Street man and went to his house, it said. There, the man “confirmed that he was walking westbound on Elm Street with his dog this afternoon at approximately 1645 hrs when two kids ran by his dog,” it said. The dog “sprung at one of them grabbing their sweatshirt,” though the man “did not know that the dog actually bit” the child, “so he continued walking and the children continued running on Elm St.”
The man confirmed with police that his dog was up-to-date on its rabies shot, and his wife later provided veterinary paperwork to police demonstrating the same, the report said.
Police then contacted the juvenile’s family and informed them that the dog was up-to-date on its shots, it said.
