Last week the Town Council agreed to put together the revitalized Utilities Commission (UC) made up of nine town residents (up from five). This is an important commission as it will make recommendations to the town on public utilities such as natural gas, solar, sewer, water and with revisiting cellular service and a possible cell tower (or other technology).

Our Board of Selectmen are currently meeting with interested residents. They are actively seeking New Canaan residents who are interested in serving on this volunteer commission. If anyone is interested they should send their resume and cover letter to them at: BoSDistribution@newcanaan.gov

While the selectmen have not shared formal requirements for UC volunteers, I’m told that you do not need to be an MIT engineer to apply! I have been told they are looking for residents who bring a diverse skill set to the newly composed UC. They indicated at last week’s Town Council meeting that they are looking to make selections quickly, so resumes and cover letters are likely needed this week.

Kind regards,

Carter Weiss

Anyone who attended Matthew Desmond’s talk at the library on Wednesday evening may want to participate in the following upcoming town meetings.

On May 17, from 6:30 to 7:00 pm, the Town Council is holding a public hearing (in person and via Zoom) to vote on this ordinance amendment regarding an affordable housing committee.

On May 23, at 6 pm, Planning & Zoning Commission will meet.  No Zoom link yet, but generally the morning of an event, these can be found on the town’s home page: newcanaan.info.  Scroll down to the calendar of events on the right.

Best –

Deborah Shaw
