May Fair Coming This Friday, Saturday [Q&A]

More

One of New Canaan’s most beloved community events, May Fair, is marking its 75th year this weekend. It kicks off with Friday Night Lights (5 to 10 p.m.) and runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

We put some questions to May Fair Committee chair John Kennedy, Jr. ahead of the big fair on the St. Mark’s green.

Here’s our exchange.

John Kennedy, Jr.: As this is my first year as Committee Chair, I am most impressed by the dedication of our leaders and their teams. With two days of preparation remaining, I feel that this 75th year of the May Fair will be memorable for all.

Tell us about volunteer opportunities for May Fair this year.

Volunteer opportunities still exist in many departments. Most shifts are three hours long and do not require manual labor – just a helpful attitude and desire to be part of a team. Visit https://www.stmarksnewcanaan.org/MayFair to sign up now, or show up at the information booth during May Fair hours, and we will find you a spot!

How is the hugely popular White Elephant tag sale coming, and what should our readers know about donating?

The White Elephant donation days are complete, but the doors are open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and we have accepted an incredible assortment of items for viewing and purchasing at very low prices. Jewelry, fine arts & collectibles, furniture, linens, lighting, children’s toys, outdoor goods, sporting equipment, and books are plentiful and a treasure trove for many.

St. Mark’s started “Friday Night Lights” several years ago. For those who have only attended the traditional Saturday fair in the past, what would you tell them about Friday Night Lights?

Friday Night Lights is an exciting night for all ages – in particular for middle and high schoolers with high-energy rides and great food, including pizza. Yet, it’s also the perfect place for younger children to enjoy more gentle rides and share a hot dog with mom and dad. It’s a memory-making evening.

Many people don’t know that May Fair is a fundraiser for St. Mark’s Episcopal Church outreach programs—another great reason to support it. Give us a rundown on the sales, food, merchandise and activities that’s available at May Fair this year.

All net proceeds support St. Mark’s mission of reaching out and supporting our neighbors and community in a loving and caring manner. May Fair derives income from ticket sales for the Midway amusement rides, White Elephant purchases, Food Court sales, and generous local businesses who sponsor this long-time New Canaan tradition. We could not provide the outreach to local charities, nonprofits, and those in need without the amazing time and energy of our volunteers and the generosity of our patrons. Final words: Come to May Fair’s 75th year – guaranteed you’ll smile, and perhaps you’ll make someone else smile too! It’s a happy time and grand fun for everyone. Seventy-five years strong in this great community of New Canaan.
