Chef Luis To Reopen As Soon As Friday; Classic Menu Items Returning

Luis Lopez, one of New Canaan’s best-loved chefs, is set to reopen his eponymous restaurant in the heart of the downtown. ‘Chef Luis’ and many of the popular Nuevo Latino menu items that made it a go-to destination for food-lovers, could be back as early as Friday, Lopez said. “I’m very excited, a little nervous because I am concerned about the health of the community,” he told NewCanaanite.com. “So I am trying to make sure we doing everything required and possible to protect everybody.”

The restaurant at 129 Elm St. will focus on takeout to start and is awaiting approval of a liquor permit.

Donations Needed To Support ‘Holiday Lights’ in Downtown New Canaan

The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce is calling on residents to support one of the town’s most cherished holiday traditions. The thousands of soft white LED lights that New Canaan’s Hutchinson Tree Care Specialists Inc. for decades has woven into the trees on Elm, Main and Forest Streets, as well as Morse Court, are supported by individual contributions made to a tax-deductible Chamber charitable foundation. Since 2008, residents’ generosity has ensured support for the lights, and the Chamber developed the tax-deductible foundation in recent years. “Let’s be honest, it’s the darkest time of the year and this year that has even more meaning, considering the surge in coronavirus cases,” Laura Budd, the Chamber’s executive director, told NewCananite.com. “And I think when you drive into town and see the lights at night, especially for people shopping or coming off of the train or dining out at one of our restaurants, it’s a really warm and welcoming feeling.

‘We Love the People of New Canaan’: Patisserie Salzburg Opens on Elm Street

After months of anticipation, Patisserie Salzburg bakery and café has opened in the heart of downtown New Canaan. Offering a wide range of sandwiches, soups and salads in addition to its specialty baked goods, desserts and coffees, the European-Style café at 25 Elm St. is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days per week. “We are very happy,” owner Par Shakiban said Wednesday morning amid a lunchtime rush at the brightly lit, cozy space where several socially distanced diners sat down for food both inside and out on the sidewalk. “We love the people in New Canaan because they’ve been more than gracious in welcoming us with an open heart.

‘So Long Summer Sale’ Launches Downtown

A welcome sight returned to downtown New Canaan amid the COVID-19 pandemic Friday, as more than two dozen local merchants took to the sidewalks to sell their wares at bargains in a modified version of the traditional Sidewalk Sale. Designed as a socially distanced and scaled-down version of the bustling midsummer event, the first-ever So Long Summer Sale saw mask-wearing bargain-hunters peruse racks and tables on the one-way stretches of Elm and Forest Streets, both closed to motor vehicle traffic. Laura Budd, who is taking over as executive director of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, said the organization was “thrilled with the turnout.”

“Shoppers have been streaming in all day and we have 100% mask compliance,” she said. “We have been in constant contact with all the Merchants out on the street and they feel the event has struck the right balance of business and safety. The weather  looks great for tomorrow and we will have a few new vendors  joining us so we look forward to seeing new and returning shoppers.”

The So Long Summer Sale will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. again on Saturday.
