What follows is a rundown on recent animal-related police calls. Officer Allyson Halm, head of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section, provided information when asked about these cases.

The Devonwood Lane owner of a Great Pyrenees dog on Sept. 5 was issued a $92 ticket for allowing a dog to roam. It’s the third time this year that the same dog has been found roaming and its owner cited for the infraction-level violation (Feb. 26 and July 8). The same family had been cited in the past for roaming violations for its Bernese Mountain Dog following a neglect investigation involving the animal.

After destroying a Mariomi Road bird feeder around 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 8, a black bear was chased up into a tree by dogs. The animal was spotted on Laurel Road around 11 a.m., then Sleepy Hollow Road at noon, and was last seen getting into two garbage cans—first on North Wilton Road and then upper Smith Ridge Road.

Police on Tuesday issued a verbal warning to a Lukes Wood Road homeowner after a landscaper left a gate open and the family’s dog ran toward the street and frightened a jogger passing by. The dog didn’t make physical contact with the jogger, who reported that it’s happened before.

A dog is OK after being struck by a vehicle on St. John’s Place at about 4:38 p.m. Wednesday. The driver stopped immediately after striking the dog and a police officer in the area saw the accidental collision.

Finally, an officer shot and killed a sick raccoon at a Valley Road residence at about 5:13 p.m. Wednesday. The lethargic animal was under a chair on a terrace and the homeowner’s dog ran toward it and made contact with the animal. The dog is to get a booster for rabies, though the owner opted not to have the raccoon tested.
