Police Investigate Vandalism of Fence at Farm and South

Police say they’re investigating a report of vandalism of the fence at South Avenue and Farm Road that promotes New Canaan High School sports contests and other community events. Spray-painted multiple times in blue at the conspicuous corner, the “4-1” that greeted passersby Sunday morning might refer to the final score of Saturday’s Darien varsity boys ice hockey team win over NCHS. New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro, the department’s public information officer, confirmed when asked by NewCanaanite.com about the matter that authorities received a complaint of vandalism and are investigating. One year ago, a similar message was spray-painted on Darien High School’s sign after the Rams defeated the Blue Wave in the same rivalry. Darien boys ice hockey leads Division I of the FCIAC this year with a 5-1-2 record.

New Canaan Basketball Gets Defensive in 40-28 Win Over Norwalk

Before the 2021 season began, Danny Melzer talked about the resilience of the New Canaan boys basketball team – how even if things didn’t go their way, the Rams would somehow respond and find their way.

And as they have all season long, the Rams made their coach look like a prophet Monday night at Norwalk High School. New Canaan overcame some offensive struggles and the absence of injured senior co-captain and leading scorer Leo Magnus with a stellar defensive performance, holding the Bears to just nine first half points en route to a 40-28 win. “We made plays when we needed to and made stops when we needed to,” Melzer told NewCanaanite.com. “When you do that on the road, sometimes you have to survive and advance and that’s what we did. I was proud of that.

New Canaan Basketball Topples Ridgefield 64-59

Two days, two wins over previously-undefeated teams. It’s been quite a week so far for the New Canaan Rams boys basketball team. Twenty-four hours after handing Staples its first loss of the year, the Rams took down Ridgefield 64-59 in a tense, exciting game in double-overtime Wednesday night at New Canaan High School. “Both teams threw punches and both teams answered punches,” New Canaan head coach Danny Melzer said. “It was fun to be a part of and obviously more fun being on the winning end. It was a well-played game and I’m proud of everything we did tonight to earn the victory.”

As they have been all season the Rams were gritty, patient and resilient, never panicking nor letting the game get too far out of reach.

New Canaan Boys Basketball Knocks Off Staples 59-50

Denis Mulcahy wasn’t a name most FCIAC coaches were familiar with coming into 2021. The New Canaan senior didn’t log too many minutes last season and has mainly been content this year to be a role player – setting bone crushing screens, dominating the glass at both ends of the court, taking charges and diving for loose balls.

After Tuesday night’s performance against Staples, Mulcahy’s anonymity will be a thing of the past.

The 6’5” forward was left open for most of the first half and he made the Wreckers pay, scoring 10 of his team-high 18 points on the night and leading New Canaan to a 59-50 road win. “Denis played with such confidence,” New Canaan head coach Danny Melzer said. “He didn’t hesitate and believed in himself. He works so hard on his shot.

Magnus Scores 27, Leads New Canaan Basketball Over Darien 55-51

Nearly two weeks had passed since Leo Magnus last played in a New Canaan basketball game. By the end of Saturday’s contest against Darien, it seemed as though the senior co-captain had never left.

The Colorado College-bound senior returned after missing two games due to Covid protocol and poured in a career-high 27 points to lead the Rams over the Blue Wave 55-51 in a nail-biter at New Canaan High School.

“It felt amazing to be back out there,” Magnus told NewCanaanite.com. “Every day I was dying to come back to practice. I love my teammates and missed it so much and when I came back to practice yesterday it just felt so good to be back with my guys. Everyone is happy for each other’s success and that just leads to great wins like this.”

“Leo played like an All-FCIAC player tonight,” New Canaan head coach Danny Melzer said.
