An established women’s “lifestyle boutique” featuring casual yet chic clothing, shoes and accessories has opened in one of downtown New Canaan’s most conspicuous commercial spaces, at the corner of South Avenue and Elm Street.
With one location in Katonah, N.Y., Catherine H opened at 48 Elm St. following suggestions from many of the shop’s Connecticut clients, according to assistant store manager Marsha Miranda.
Founded and owned by Catherine Hiriart, Catherine H is a good fit for New Canaan because “the town is charming, and has a small town feel with an added touch of sophistication,” Miranda said.
“The area draws clients who are looking for a shopping experience, that it isn’t found in a mall, but where specialty stores are found.”
Asked about Catherine H’s offerings, Miranda said Hiriart “doesn’t follow the trends.”
“Instead, she picks timeless garments that are unique and special,” Miranda said. “The lines that we feature are not represented in the area, and we offer nice a variety of styles and items that suit different body types.”
The store officially opened July 14 and Miranda said she has been “delighted by the warm welcome and positive response.”
“We plan on staying in New Canaan,” she said.
Tucker Murphy, executive director of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, said she was “excited that they jumped in and took advantage of the Taste of the Town Stroll” on Thursday “so stroll-goers could visit their store.”
“They seem to understand that in a town like New Canaan, to be successful in business, you must establish relationships,” Murphy said.
According to Miranda, part of what makes New Canaan a special place and a draw for prospective clients is multiple options in fashion.
“As a small business, we value diversity, and feel strongly that our offerings, alongside those of our neighbors, enrich the shopping experience for every visitor of the Elm Street shops,” she said.
“We provide a personal shopping experience to every customer, emphasizing fit, comfort, and versatility of every item. Our philosophy is that a wardrobe should consist of a few well made, core items that can be dressed up or down with the change of accessories.”
Catherine H. in New Canaan is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday. It’s closed on Mondays.
Welcome to New Canaan, Catherine H; it is great to see your new shop.
