Residents over the weekend reported early-morning thefts of multiple motor vehicles from New Canaan homes, according to police, crimes that authorities have tied to suspected gang members from Waterbury.
On Saturday, the New Canaan Police Department received a complaint about two vehicles—a 2017 Mercedes E400 and 2017 Acura RDX—stolen from the driveway of a Forest Street home, according to Chief Leon Krolikowski.
Both of those vehicles were later recovered in Waterbury, he said in a press release.
The following day, a 2015 Infiniti QX60 was reported stolen from a Weed Street driveway, the police chief said.
In all cases, the vehicles were unlocked with the keys inside, he said.
Also on Nov. 5, a 2009 Audi A4 on Old Kings Highway was reported to have been illegally entered, according to Krolikowski.
Other Fairfield County towns are seeing similar crimes, he said.
Here are some prevention tips from Krolikowski:
- Keys: Neverleave the keys to your home or car inside a vehicle or in a place where a thief can find them.
- Light Up Your Home: At night, keep the perimeter of your home & driveway well lit. Low energy lighting switched on and off by photoelectric sensors (low light switches) is a cost-effective way to discourage criminals.
- Lock Up: Alwayslock all doors and windows of your car and home whenever you leave, day or night, even for a short time. If you have a garage, put your car in it and lock/alarm both the car and the garage.
- Secure Valuables: Neverleave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen.
- Use Your Alarm System: Alwaysactivate your home and car alarm systems. The majority of successful crimes that occur in our Town involve houses or cars that have alarm systems that were not activated.
