Police on Thursday received multiple reports of politically charged graffiti in the downtown area, officials say.

In downtown New Canaan on May 28, 2024.

Between 4:52 and 5:41 p.m. on May 28, police received five separate reports, at Main and Elm Streets, South and Elm, 32 Elm St. 111 Main St. and 93 Main St., the New Canaan Police Department’s public information officer, Lt. Marc DeFelice, confirmed.

“This is an ongoing and active investigation at this time,” DeFelice said. “These cases appear to be the same suspect. Town has assisted with removing graffiti.”

The chalk-drawn markings are not connected to reports of graffiti in downtown New Canaan as well as Bristow Park earlier this spring, DeFelice said.

Photographs of the chalk markings received by NewCanaanite.com and confirmed by NCPD show messages including ‘Free Palestine,’ ‘Free Rafah’ and ‘All [Eyes] on Rafah.’

On Thursday, a local resident wrote a letter to NewCanaanite.com claiming responsibility.
