Update 9:10 p.m.
The young boy seen on video surveillance ringing the doorbell of an eastern New Canaan home late Monday has been identified and found, Police Lt. Jason Ferraro said in a media update.
“He is home sleeping,” Ferraro said. “No further information will be released at this time. The New Canaan Police Department thanks the community for their assistance in this matter.”
The comments ended a very strange hour of local news in town that started around 8 p.m. when Emergency Management Director Mike Handler alerted residents of a “missing child” in the area of Valley Road. Police then clarified that no one had reported a missing child—rather, the unidentified boy had been seen on video surveillance of a lower Valley Road home, prompting a search in the area.
Update 8:45 p.m.
Police at 8:30 p.m. issued a press bulletin clarifying that no one reported a “missing child” in New Canaan, as communicated earlier by the town’s emergency management director.
Rather, a child about seven to eight years old at 6:30 p.m. approached a home on lower Valley Road and rang a doorbell—an incident recorded on video surveillance, according to Police Lt. Jason Ferraro, the department’s public information officer.
“Currently, the New Canaan Police, with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies and K-9 units are searching the said area in hopes of locating the unidentified child,” Ferraro said in the press release.
Anyone with information that might help identify the child are asked to please call the police department at 203-594-3502.

Police are searching for a missing boy, white and 5 to 7 years old, in the area of Valley Road on the east side of New Canaan, officials said late Monday.
In a text message and robocall to locals that went out shortly before 8 p.m., Emergency Management Director Mike Handler said New Canaan Police at 6:30 p.m. received a report of the missing boy, who has short blonde hair and was last seen wearing only white socks and a pull-up diaper.
Those with information are asked to call police at 203-594-3502.
It wasn’t clear who the boy is, just when he went missing, from where or how, or why the reporting party was only able to provide an age range rather than more specific details. No other information was immediately available.

The pull-up diaper on a 5-7 year old was highly suspicious, I hope this isn’t a boy crying wolf!
