Police before dawn Monday arrested three men and two male juveniles after finding guns, ammunition and stolen items in vehicles they were driving in New Canaan.
A sixth person fled from the scene on Raymond Street, a short dead-end road near the center of town, and has not yet been found, according to a police report.
The incident unfolded at about 3:10 a.m., when an officer on patrol spotted two vehicles speeding up Route 123, the report said. The vehicles—a Honda CRV and Jeep Wrangler—were traveling dangerously close together, the report said.
The officer started following the vehicles, which turned left onto East Avenue before turning onto Raymond Street, where two occupants of the Jeep exited and ran behind a house, the report said. One of those, a 21-year-old Bronx, N.Y. man, was found behind a tree near a house. Police found that he had an active paperless re-arrest warrant, and also that he was in possession of two stolen checks and a key fob for a Volkswagen in Norwalk, the report said. He admitted to stealing them, it said. He was charged with sixth-degree larceny and scheduled to appear later the same day in state Superior Court.
In searching the Honda, police found a tan H&K airsoft gun and fully loaded 9mm Taurus handgun with a laser sight attached, in addition to a bag of more 9mm rounds, the report said.
Two of the men in the Jeep—19- and 20-year-olds from Norwalk—were charged with risk of injury to a child and two counts of illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. The 20-year-old also was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a firearm. They each were held on $20,000 bond and scheduled to appear the same day in court.
The juveniles, a 17-year-old from Norwalk and 16-year-old from Bridgeport, were issued summonses for possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and released to their parents.
