Police on Missing Woman: ‘We Have Not Classified This Case as a Homicide’

Police said Friday that they’re spending the morning handing out ‘Missing Person’ flyers (embedded below) for the New Canaan woman who disappeared one week ago. Contrary to some published reports, investigators have not classified the missing person and criminal case as a homicide, according to New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro, the department’s public information officer. “We have not recovered a body,” Ferraro said in a press release. “We will not discuss any possible persons of interest/suspects as this investigation is active and ongoing. We will not discuss any evidence that has been recovered at this time during our investigation. We have not arrested any individuals in this case.”

Jennifer Dulos, 50, hasn’t been seen since dropping her kids off at school on May 24, according to police. Friends reported her missing to police at about 7:30 p.m. that night, and authorities found her black SUV parked on Lapham Road near Waveny.

At the time of her disappearance, Jennifer Dulos had been entangled for nearly two years in a bitter divorce and custody dispute with her estranged husband.

Missing Woman’s Mother: Estranged Husband Owes Family $2.5 Million in Loans

The estranged husband of a New Canaan woman who’s been missing for one week borrowed nearly $10 million from his father-in-law over a dozen years prior to his wife’s filing for divorce in 2017, and still owes about $2.5 million of the loaned money, according to claims made in court filings. Jennifer Dulos’s father, Hilliard Farber, died two years ago, and his widow, Gloria Farber, last year sued Fitos Dulos and his construction company, claiming that the son-in-law hadn’t repaid money that he’d borrowed to purchase and redevelop properties in New Canaan and Avon, according to a complaint filed in February 2018.

At first, in suing Fotis Dulos and his construction company, Fore Group Inc., for breach of contract and unjust enrichment among other civil matters, Gloria Farber had said that he failed to pay back about $1.6 million in lent money. But Fotis Dulos in November provided the court cancelled checks showing that at least $670,000 of that had, in fact, been paid back. That led a judge in September to order that Gloria Farber could attach just $500,000 in Fitos Dulos’s assets to the case—far less than she’d been seeking.

Yet Gloria Farber then said she realized that she’d “had difficulty securing all of the decedent’s [Hilliard Farber’s] bank records and documentation in regard to the lending relationship” between her deceased husband and Fore Group, according to a second amended complaint filed Jan. 10.

Police: Criminal Investigation Launched in Missing Woman Case

Police said Wednesday that authorities have launched a criminal investigation in the case of a missing local woman to determine whether she was harmed.

Jennifer Dulos, 50, was reported missing at about 7:30 p.m. Friday and has not yet been located, according to New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro, the department’s public information officer. She first was reported missing by friends who “indicated that they had not heard from her for approximately ten hours, and she had missed several appointments during the day,” Ferraro said in a press release. “The last time one of the friends had contact with Jennifer was earlier in the day after Jennifer had dropped her children off at school,” Ferraro said. “Jennifer was believed to be driving her 2017 black Chevy Suburban at the time she dropped off the children at school. At no time were the five Dulos children missing.  Additionally, the children are safe and with family.”

The new details come as the police case, which is now both a missing person as well as a criminal investigation, dominates local and regional news headlines and tugs at the hearts of many in New Canaan. Dulos has been described by some who knew her as warm, highly intelligent and devoted to her five young children.

Accusations of Threats, Lying, Manipulation in Missing New Canaan Woman’s Divorce Case

The New Canaan woman reported missing last week said at the time she filed for divorce two years ago that she was afraid of her estranged husband and feared for her life—accusations he flatly denied in receiving joint custody from the courts. Described by some who knew her as warm, generous and devoted to her children, Jennifer Dulos was reported missing to New Canaan Police at about 7:30 p.m. on May 24. The 50-year-old last was seen driving a black SUV in New Canaan, police said. State and local police are investigating. In hundreds of court filings that include an application for emergency custody made the same day that she filed for divorce, Jennifer Dulos described her husband as a dangerous and controlling man who stepped out on their marriage and then violated court orders during protracted legal proceedings.
