New Canaan Gears Up for Aug. 21 ‘Taste of the Town Stroll’

New Canaan’s business community is gearing up for an increasingly popular annual event that connects local merchants with customers while benefitting the local food pantry. The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce’s third annual Taste of the Town Stroll, benefitting the New Canaan Food Pantry, runs from 6 to 9 p.m. next Thursday, Aug. 21 (rain date Aug. 22). Chamber Marketing Associate Laura Budd calls the event “a triple win.”

“Number one, the food pantry gets stocked.

NewCanaanite.com Business Directory Launches—First Listing: New Canaan Music

[Editor’s Note: Today, we at NewCanaanite.com are launching our business directory, “Biz Direct,” with a listing of New Canaan Music—you can find it here. It offers locals the ability to rate and review the business (as with comments on New Canaanite, the areas are “gated” and require manual approval by the editors) and includes photos, a Q&A with owner Phil Williams and an interactive Google map as well as a description of the business, contact and hours information and links to New Canaan Music’s website and social media accounts.]

Phil Williams, a town resident since 2001, took a circuitous route in opening his music shop in downtown New Canaan. A Ridgewood, N.J. native who earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lynchburg College before moving to New York City, Williams for years worked as a financial controller in Manhattan. Though he worked full-time as a corporate professional, Williams also nurtured his interest and talent as a guitar (and mandolin) player—and songwriter. Then last year, the father of two decided to put everything behind pursuing a vision of owning his own business, one that would “give back to the community” doing what he knew best.

Sidewalk Sale Sneak Preview: What to Expect This Saturday

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. In advance of Saturday’s annual Village Fair & Sidewalk Sale (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), NewCanaanite.com ventured to different shops throughout downtown New Canaan to get some insights into what to expect to see at the different booths this year. One such store is New Canaan Olive Oil located on Elm Street across from the New Canaan Playhouse. The store’s owner, Heidi Burrows, told us that her store will be giving out samples of a variety of products and will offer deals on certain items. “We’ll be doing sales on all of our local jams, all of our sea salts will be on sale for $5, we’re doing gift boxes like a bread-dipper gift box, a salad dressing gift box for $15, and then we’re also doing a buy one get 25 percent off any oil or vinegar,” Ms. Burrows said. New Canaan Olive Oil is not the only local store that will be joining in on the festivities.

[On the video above: NewCanaanite.com asked Phil Williams and Jim O’Neil of New Canaan Music for a tune to mark Thursday’s huge 12 p.m. U.S.A. vs. Germany match. The guys also had a soccer ball ready for a cutaway on the word ‘kick.’ Good thinking, thanks guys!]

Here’s something New Canaan learned last weekend about our town: People here are down for gathering as a community to watch the World Cup together. An estimated 500-plus people came to the volunteer-run Pop Up Park at Elm Street and South Avenue Sunday to watch the U.S. soccer team take on Portugal.

New Canaan Couple Opens Gingerbitz, a Bakery (and More) on Elm Street

Karen Zuckert describes the eat-in bakery that she and husband Andrew soft-opened Saturday on Elm Street as “an extension of our home.”

Asked what it feels like to open a physical storefront after “hiding in the kitchen” (her words) for 21 years, earning a loyal following for her artistic baked goods, Karen said, “It’s like a homecoming.”

“I’m happy to see all my customers come here and see them so excited when they walk through the door. It’s meaningful,” Karen said Thursday afternoon as Gingerbitz filled up quickly with passersby catching sight of the newly opened shop through its street-facing, floor-to-ceiling windows. Nestled in the former Caroline’s Créperie space, the elegant Gingerbitz occupies what had been the only vacant (or at least non-operating) street-level commercial storefront on Elm between Main and Park. Open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, Gingerbitz includes 15 seats (there’ll be eight more out front if and when Spring arrives), features fresh “moody blues” (garden roses) on the tables, area artists’ work (for sale) on the walls, found materials-made light fixtures and clock, and its edible offerings are anchored by Karen’s baked goods. With chef Ashley Boucaud (trained at Providence, RI-based Johnson & Wales University’s College of Culinary Arts), the Zuckerts offer an eclectic menu: sandwiches (imported French brie and ham, roast chicken); salads (fresh goat cheese, marinated tomato tart on field greens), organic smoothies (soon), fresh-squeezed juices, Stumptown coffees, soft-serve ice cream, pots of tea, chutneys and of course, pastries and baked goods (Karen works with Guittard chocolate).
