Albert Lee Scribner, 94

April 26, 1926 – September 21, 2020

Albert Lee Scribner, 94, of Arlington, Washington, died on September 21, losing his fight with Alzheimer’s. Albert was born on April 26, 1926 in Stamford, Connecticut, one of 8 children. He lived in Darien and graduated early from high school to enter the Army Air Force to serve his country during World War II. Upon graduation he went to Arnold College in New Haven to earn a teaching degree. Albert subsequently became the elementary school gym teacher at West School in New Canaan for 32 years.

Raymond C. Wheeler, Jr., 96

Raymond Croasdale Wheeler, Jr., 96, passed away on September 26, 2020.         

He was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 19, 1924, to Marion Thorn Wheeler and Raymond C. Wheeler. The Wheelers moved to Glendale, California, where Ray graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1942. 

Ray attended Stanford University where he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve. In 1943, he was sent by the Navy to the California Institute of Technology where he became a Company and Battalion Commander, graduating in 1945 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipman’s School in Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, graduating in November 1945 as an Ensign, serving aboard the USS General LeRoy Eltinge. He was honorably discharged as Lt. Junior Grade in June 1946.

Keith MacBain, NCHS Teacher and Coach

Keith MacBain died at his home in Southampton, Massachusetts, September 13th, of complications from Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Englewood, New Jersey, Keith attended Deerfield Academy, and graduated in 1956. He received a BA in English from Cornell University in 1960 and an MA from Columbia Teachers College in 1964. He married Cynthia Loring in August of 1960, and they moved to Homewood, Illinois, to teach for two years. After moving back to Connecticut, Keith taught English at New Canaan High School in Connecticut through 1990, and was Chairman of the English Department for the last ten years.

Elizabeth Grymes, 82

Elizabeth Braxton Rains Grymes, a former longtime New Canaan resident, died at home on Monday, September 7, 2020 from complications of pulmonary fibrosis and congestive heart failure. 

Mrs. Grymes was born on March 1, 1938 at home in Warsaw, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Dr. Warren Biscoe Rains and Emma Lemoine Griffith. Betty grew up in Virginia and was a graduate of both St. Catherine’s School in Richmond and of the University of Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. After graduation, she worked for the State of Virginia in assisting adults with special needs to find employment. Betty married Peyton Grymes, Jr. of Richmond, VA in 1962.

Beanie Banks, 13

Beanie Banks, cherished Weimaraner of Elizabeth Oei, died Friday, Sept. 11 following a diagnosis earlier this year of nasal adenocarcinoma. He was 13. Beanie was predeceased by brother Cosmo. Born Aug.
