Muriel Heilshorn Kilbride, 96

Long-time New Canaan resident Muriel Heilshorn Kilbride died on March 18th in Montclair, New Jersey. Muriel served as a Deacon of the Congregational Church of New Canaan and was involved in many activities in the town and at Lapham Community Center. 

She was born in Brooklyn on June 26, 1923 to William H. Heilshorn, Jr. and Anna Hudaff Heilshorn and was raised in Floral Park, LI and Norwalk, CT. She attended Norwalk High School but met her future husband John J. Kilbride (Jack) when they were Senior classmates at Sewanhaka High School on Long Island. 

As life partner to an international shipping executive who was travelling continuously on business, Muriel was an accomplished home front chief executive juggling the demands of raising five children at home in Bellerose Village, LI and was an accomplished hostess, chef, needle worker, gardener, creative force, family counselor and community and church volunteer. She was a dear companion and listener to a wide circle of cherished life-long friends. Muriel was a lifetime learner always enrolled in some sort of coursework ranging from Literature to Opera to Bible Studies to Flower Arranging.

Kemp Dwenger, 90

On the afternoon of Friday, January 17th Kemp Dwenger passed away peacefully in Denver Colorado with his children, Tim and Kendra, by his side. While Kemp had called Denver home since 2016, he was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1929 to George H. Dwenger and Mary Louise Alexander and grew up with his brother Sandy in the Northern New Jersey town of Montclair. Kemp is survived by his son Tim, daughter Kendra, and granddaughters Story, Havyn, and Payton who all miss him dearly. While Kemp didn’t particularly love his chosen college of Oberlin, his future was shaped by an opportunity to spend his junior year in Paris which sparked an interest in a career in international business. Throughout his life, Kemp frequently shared stories of his time in France living on the banks of the Seine.

Carol Ann Sung, 56

Carol Ann Sung, 56, of New Canaan, CT, passed away on January 26, 2020.  She was born on October 31, 1963 to Louis and Carol Ciavarelli Lombardi. Carol was the beloved wife of Henry Sung of New Canaan. 

Carol grew up in Yonkers, NY and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1981. She received a four-year scholarship to play basketball at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY, where she studied psychology and received a Bachelor of Science degree. She worked as a guidance counselor for the New York Public School system for fifteen years, focusing on children with special needs.  She continued her education while working and earned two Masters of Science in Education from Long Island University. In her late twenties, Carol took up parachuting and completed over 1000 jumps.

Joseph Tracey Mackle

Joseph Tracey Mackle of New Canaan, Connecticut died peacefully in his sleep on January 26, 2020. 

Tracey was born and raised in Philadelphia, the son of Joseph Aloysius and Isabelle Tracey Mackle. He received his undergraduate degree from St. Joseph’s University and his master’s from Boston University, after which he taught mathematics and science at a high school in Boston. He joined the Honeywell Corporation as a programmer in the emerging computer business in the early 1960s, and subsequently rose to head of training for the eastern U.S., in the process of which he met his future wife Maxine Kohl, who at the time held the same position in the company’s Canadian subsidiary. 

After their marriage, the couple moved to New Canaan, where Tracey managed the mid- Manhattan office. Following Honeywell’s purchase of General Electric’s computer business in 1970, Tracey became director of computer operations in Tokyo, where he worked with several major manufacturers in ventures which Honeywell and GE had previously held separately.

Peter C. Langenus, 76

Peter C. Langenus, a hero and veteran of the Vietnam War and of Desert Storm, has fought his last battle with cancer. That battle ended on January 17, 2020 at his home in New Canaan, CT with his wife Eileen and son Brendan at his side. On September 18, 1943, Peter was born in New York City, the fourth of the five children of Alan and Dorothy Langenus. He attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating with honors and then NYU School of Law, being admitted to the New York Bar after his military service. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army and then completed several Army schools including Airborne, Ranger, Jungle Warfare and later the Command and General Staff College.
