New Canaan Police at 8 p.m. May 1 arrested a 35-year-old Forest Street man who tried to get reimbursed for returning what turned out to be an empty box of Nicorette gum at a local pharmacy.
A manager at Walgreens phoned police after he opened up the box of Nicorette gum—which felt light to the manager, according to Sgt. Peter Condos—and found it full of paper.
Police charged the New Canaan man with sixth-degree criminal attempt at larceny.
He had a receipt and told police didn’t know the box was empty, Condos said.
“That happens a lot at the CVS, too,” Condos said.
The Forest Street man was released after promising to appear May 12 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
