The senior daschshund found on a Tuesday night last month in northwestern New Canaan after apparently being “dumped” in town appears to be thriving with the Norwalk family that adopted her.

McKinley Dorrico, 24, said she named her newest family member ‘Chloe’ after a mischievous dog in the 1966 film ‘The Ugly Dachshund,’ about a Great Dane that thinks it’s a little daschhund.

“She is the sweetest thing. Oh my god we are so in love with her,” Dorrico said.

Chloe had been found around 8 p.m. on Jan. 10, walking along Ponus Ridge near Lost District Drive, according to officials in the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department. Un-chipped and unclaimed one week after Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm advertised her, Chloe became adoptable Jan. 20.

Dorrico said she works at Best Friends Pet Care in Norwalk with Gillian Bosch, one of New Canaan’s Animal Control officers, and learned of the dog’s through her co-worker.

The family already had Chance, a terrier mix also adopted as a senior dog, and was “looking for another pet,” Dorrico said.

“When I first went to meet with her, she was a little bit nervous but then she came right up to me and with a few pets and treats she was right at home,” Dorrico recalled. “I knew looking at her that I could give her a good home.”

And she has.

Chloe is “so funny,” Dorrico said.

“She loves Chance, tries to play with him all the time. And he’s been good, he lets her take his food, water and toys, anything she wants. For the first few days she was a little nervous but she instantly fell in love with my dad. She fell for him hard, to the point where if he leaves in the morning she gets up for a walk and barks when he leaves. It takes her a while to calm down after he leaves. It’s really good because she had been barking at men and I wasn’t sure how she would be with men, so it’s really sweet. He [Dad] is in love with her, too.”

Chloe goes to South Wilton Veterinary Group and eats Natural Balance-brand food, Dorrico said. She showed some allergic reactions to vaccines but has rallied and is healthy.

Asked how she feels about rescuing a dog that appeared to have been dumped by someone, Dorrico said: “You know, to be honest I just focus on giving her the best life that I can. I know she had a lot of years before I met her and maybe they were not the best, but my focus is always on the best I can give her and she sees that, too. She definitely has grown to love us a lot, the main focus of me with her and is making sure she has the best life I can give her. And she’s a princess, so she loves that.”
