Gofer Ice Cream On Track To Open in One Month

Gofer Ice Cream is on track to open downtown in late-March or early-April, according to the business’s owner. The final major piece of the interior renovation at 103 Main St. that’s been underway since January is a granite countertop, said franchisee Jordan Savitt, who owns the business with his wife, Dina. “I am over-the-top excited to be going to such a great town like New Canaan,” the North Stamford resident told NewCanaanite.com. “We have already had some New Canaan people coming into our Darien location, and a lot of New Canaan kids applying online, so I am very excited to open our ice cream store at a perfect time.”

Gofer has operated in the area for 17 years, and the Savitts already own and operate both Darien and Wilton locations.

Drunk Driving Charge for 38-Year-Old Man

Police last week arrested a 38-year-old Stamford man and charged him with driving under the influence.

At about 3:45 p.m. on Feb. 27, an officer on patrol stopped a vehicle traveling westbound on East Avenue with a brake light out, according to a police report. During a subsequent stop, the officer detected signs of impairment, the report said. The man was taken into custody and charged following field sobriety tests, it said. He refused to undergo a test to establish his blood-alcohol level, police said.

Police additionally cited him for a motor vehicle infraction, because the man wasn’t driving with an Ignition Interlock Device that was required as per the terms of his last drunk driving arrest.

PHOTO: Car Crashes into Tree on Wahackme Road Monday Afternoon

Emergency responders on Monday afternoon rushed to the scene of a single-car crash near Irwin Park. An early assessment of the crash on Wahackme Road showed no serious injuries, officials said, though the front end of the involved black Toyota Prius hybrid suffered significant damage after crashing into a tree.

The sedan came to rest facing eastbound off of Wahackme’s west side after crashing at about 12:30 p.m.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash, how many passengers were in the Toyota or whether motor vehicle citations will follow a police investigation.

New Canaan Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel were on scene.

Police directed a single lane of traffic around the crash scene, while pedestrians walking the Flexi-pave path at Irwin on a sunny day stopped to see what was happening.
