Saturday’s annual Village Fair & Sidewalk Sale (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) will feature local businesses offering great deals on products and services (as well as giveaways)—we previewed some of them here and include a fuller list at the end of this article (full vendor list here).
The hugely popular annual event also is a time when many businesses partner up to support charities, and a time for nonprofit organizations to raise money and boost memberships.

In partnership with Walter Stewart’s, New Canaan’s Lou Kozar, owner of New Canaan Bicycles in the Bob’s Sports lot, will ride a specially rigged stationary bike from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. called a “Fender Blender” that will mix up ice and lemonade that will be sold for $5 a glass with all proceeds going to the CT Challenge. The effort, which centers on a long bike ride, raises money to empower cancer survivors to live “healthier, happier and longer lives.”
“It’s a great event and I unfortunately wont’ be able to do any bike riding this year because of the time it takes place,” Kozar said. “But I love being a part of it in this way that I can, to spin my legs and contribute to the cause.”
Down Elm Street at Main, the New Canaan Veterinary Hospital will set up a table and take donations that will go toward a fund for the New Canaan Police Department’s K9 unit.

New Canaan hasn’t had its own K9 dog since its last one died following an accident a few years ago. Virtually everything associated with the dogs (which usually cost between $12,000 and $15,000) is paid for with private money, Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said.
That includes its care (though veterinary services generally are donated by New Canaan Veterinary Hospital), a stipend for the K9 officer, gas for the vehicle and everything else when the dog is working, the chief said.
The question of when New Canaan will have its own K9 unit again depends on its staffing, Krolikowski said, especially as a new dog require about six to eight weeks of training with its officer. That could happen as soon as this September, Krolikowski said, or next Spring.
“It frankly is an invaluable tool not only for those rare circumstances where suspects leave the scenes of crime, but during drug investigations,” Krolikowski said. “We’re seeing a big surge in heroin use right now, so we’d like to get a dog and use it for narcotics sales.”

New Canaan also is seeing a spike in burglaries—for which a K9 dog can be useful in linking suspects with material they leave behind at or near crime scenes, he said. (The dogs are useful in locating missing persons for the same reason, he said.) At the moment, New Canaan is reliant on K9 dogs in police departments from neighboring municipalities such as Stamford.
Back up on Elm Street, The Candy Scoop is setting up shop so that kids can make their own candy necklaces and half of what the store earns will go to the Make-A-Wish Connecticut.
“I used to work with kids, my sister and I both work with kids and we think it’s a great opportunity to partner up and help [Make-A-Wish] out during the Sidewalk Sale,” said Lauren Palladino, who owns the shop with sister Megan.
Venture Photography is donating 100 percent of its proceeds to the nonprofit New Canaan Outback Teen Center—a full-family photographic experience worth $500 is being offered for a $50 contribution to the downtown teen center.
One of the town’s most impactful nonprofit organizations, New Canaan Community Foundation, is raising money by selling its “I [heart] New Canaan” car magnets at its table.
