VIDEO: New Canaan Animal Control, Firefighters Rescue Orphaned Raccoons

New Canaan firefighters and the head of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section on Wednesday morning rescued orphaned raccoons from a Main Street residence, officials said. A homeowner phoned Animal Control on Tuesday night to report the baby raccoons crying on her property, and the following morning found that one of the three young animals was on the ground while two others were stuck up in a tree, officials said. Their mom likely had been struck and killed by a car, according to Officer Allyson Halm, head of Animal Control. As per the instructions on Animal Control’s after-hours voicemail, the homeowner brought the baby raccoon she found to Weston-based nonprofit organization Wildlife In Crisis. A second one of the babies fell from the tree as firefighters arrived at the scene Wednesday morning, according to Halm.

Three Taken to Hospital After Head-On Crash on Route 123 Early Friday

Three people were transported to Norwalk Hospital early Friday after a head-on collision on Route 123, officials said. At about 6:30 a.m., a van and car crashed in the area of Smith Ridge Road south of Norholt Drive, trapping the driver of the car, according to Fire Chief Jack Hennessey. The occupants of the van got themselves out, he said. “The high energy impact required rescue personnel to use hydraulic rescue tools, saws and a winch to free the trapped driver,” Hennessey said in a press release. Smith Ridge Road was closed for more than one hour, and reopened at about 7:50 a.m., Hennessey said.

Firefighters Extinguish Blaze at Old Stamford Road Home Early Saturday

Firefighters before dawn Saturday were dispatched to an Old Stamford Road duplex on a. Report of a structure fire, officials said. At about 3:27 a.m., the New Canaan Fire Department received a report of the fire along Route 106 near the intersection with Park Place, and arriving units found that an electrical meter panel attached to the structure had started burning, according to Fire Marshal Fred Baker. The fire at 22 Old Stamford Road was quickly extinguished and no one was injured, Baker said. The sole occupant of the dwelling had been alerted by smoke detectors, he said. Eversource was called to disconnect the panel at the pole, Baker said.

Annual Fishing Derby Set Postponed to April 27 at Mill Pond [UPDATED]

One of New Canaan’s most unique and beloved community events is set for Saturday morning. 

Registration for the New Canaan Annual Fishing Derby will start at 8 a.m. at Mill Pond, with the derby running 8:30 to 11 a.m., organizers say. Held in memory of George Cogswell, a former New Canaan Police officer, the free Fishing Derby has been held each year—primarily at Mill Pond—since the 1980s. “It’s been going on for so many years, people just know about it and it’s something kids do with their dad,” said Jenny Esposito, president of the Kiwanis Club of New Canaan, an event sponsor. “It brings the townies together and it’s just really sweet, with the police, the firemen, the town, the Chamber.”

The pond will be stocked with 370 pounds of rainbow trout and prizes are awarded for participants 15 and younger in categories such as first boy and first girl to catch a fish, largest fish caught and smallest fish caught.

Woman Sent To Hospital After Crash on Route 123 Monday Morning

A woman rear-ended while waiting to turn left off of Route 123 near downtown New Canaan was transported to Norwalk Hospital Monday morning, officials said. At about 11:29 a.m., police, fire and medical services personnel responded to the intersection of New Norwalk Road and Locust Avenue on a report of a car crash with injuries. There, officials found that a man driving a black pickup truck traveling northbound on Route 123 had rear-ended a woman in a white SUV as she waited to turn left onto Locust Avenue. Members of the New Canaan Police Department, New Canaan Fire Department and New Canaan Emergency Medical Services—formerly known as the Volunteer Ambulance Corps—responded to the scene. A puddle of liquid from one of the vehicles involved in the crash could be seen in the middle of the intersection. 

EMS personnel attended to a woman who wore a neck brace as they guided her toward an ambulance.
